There’s more to visiting a chiropractor than the care they provide while in their office. If you have an injury, medical condition, or other source of chronic pain, your chiropractor may pair chiropractic treatment with corrective exercises.
Chiropractic care, on its own, can help to address many sources of pain through techniques such as spinal adjustments. However, many health issues also stem from simple muscle strain or tension, and sometimes the cause of the spinal misalignment is from the continued pull of a tense muscle. Because of this, absolving the pain (and ensuring it does not come back) may require addressing the muscle tension.
Corrective exercises are “blueprint” exercises that strengthen and correct problem areas through gentle stretches and routines. These exercises aim to mend damaged muscle, soft tissue, and joints.
Muscles and connective tissues can become strained when the body is not aligned correctly, or they can be out of place. By working on corrective exercises assigned by your chiropractor, you can return balance to your body and help with your pain.
In some cases, muscle tension occurs because other muscles are weak and unable to perform properly. When this happens, strengthening the weak muscle can help it function as needed, allowing it to support the body while relieving pain and keeping the tense muscle from overworking.
In addition to the whole-body balance offered by corrective exercises, they can also speed along the recovery process and aid treatment by stimulating cardiovascular activity. This then allows healing nutrients to make their way to the source of the pain, helping the body correct the damaged area and lessening your discomfort.
Because of this, many of our patients at Powell Chiropractic & Wellness feel better faster when we combine corrective exercises with chiropractic care.
Your chiropractor will explain the corrective care exercises they would like you to work on based on your specific situation. It’s important not to try any of these without your chiropractor’s “go-ahead,” otherwise, you may cause additional injury by performing an exercise your body does not need or performing the exercise incorrectly.
Some examples of corrective exercises include:
- lying rotations
- hip flexor stretches
- back steps with arm raises
- lunging with knee pulls
- calf stretches
Your chiropractor may also have you work with a foam roller to apply pressure to tense muscles.
The above examples all target specific ailments; for example, hip flexor stretches help with lumbar pain, while lying rotations help with pain in the shoulder joints. Because these exercises target different areas, it is essential to talk to your chiropractor about what exercises would help relieve your pain and return balance to your body.
